Who are we?

The World Federation for Laser Dentistry (WFLD), formerly known as International Society for Laser Dentistry (ISLD), serves as a not-for-profit medium for the exchange, advancement and dissemination of scientific knowledge related to LASER and its application in detecting, curing and preventing dental diseases.

Membership is encouraged for all those interested in the clinical use of LASER technology, research and development in Dentistry and Medicine. Together, we aim to improve global standards by providing conferences and educational training to catalyse the sharing of knowledge and innovative ideas in the field of Laser in Dentistry.

History

The first medically related publications on “LASER” were made in the early 1960’s and Dentistry embraced this new modality soon thereafter for the management of dental and oral conditions.

A group of international university professors: Hajime Yamamoto (Japan), Jacques Melcer (France), Lynn Powell and Isao Ishikawa (Japan) and Loh Hong Sai, together with Prof Isaac Kaplan from Israel (a renowned plastic surgeon) as an advisor, discussed the formation of an international body to promote the practice and research of Laser in Dentistry.

The first inaugural congress of the International Society for Laser Dentistry (ISLD) as it was known then, took place in 1988 in Tokyo, Japan, under the direction of Professor Emeritus Hajime Yamamoto. Since then, biennial congresses were held every two years and attracted international delegates from around the globe, with the objective to bring together the world experts in Laser Dentistry.

In less than two decades, ISLD has gone from strength to strength, with members from over 60 countries around the world. Thanks to the noble vision, common efforts and perseverance of the 2006-Executive Board: especially from Prof Loh (Past President), Prof Ishikawa (President) and Prof Namour (President- Elect), ISLD was expanded to create 5 international divisions and was renamed the World Federation for Laser Dentistry (WFLD). This milestone development was adopted by the General Assembly, on the 18^th May 2006, at the completion of the 10^th ISLD Congress, in Berlin, Germany. On 28^th July 2008, the 11^th WFLD Congress was held in Hong Kong
